Earwigs are elongate, flattened insects belonging to the order Dermaptera, with approximately 2,000 species identified worldwide. Characterized by their distinctive forceps-like pincers (cerci) at the rear, which are used for defense and mating displays, earwigs have a somewhat misunderstood reputation, as they are often associated with negative connotations in gardens and homes. Most earwig species are nocturnal and prefer damp, sheltered environments, such as under stones, leaf litter, and in decaying wood. They primarily feed on decaying organic matter, though some species also consume living plant material and small insects. This dietary flexibility makes them important decomposers in ecosystems, contributing to nutrient recycling in soil. Contrary to popular belief, earwigs do not crawl into human ears, and they are not known to cause direct harm to humans. However, their presence in gardens can be concerning, as some species may damage young plants, fruits, and vegetables, leading to their classification as pests in agricultural settings. Earwigs undergo incomplete metamorphosis, with an egg, nymph, and adult stage, and females are known to exhibit maternal care by guarding their eggs and young nymphs. While earwigs are generally harmless to humans, their presence in significant numbers can be concerning, particularly as they may feed on young plants, fruits, and vegetables. When such instances arise, implementing pest control management strategies may be necessary to effectively manage earwig populations, reduce their impact in gardens and indoors, and promote a more comfortable living environment. Regular monitoring and proactive measures are key to preventing earwig infestations.
